Common Malware Types

Malware, short for malicious software, encompasses a wide range of programs designed to harm computer systems or steal data. Here's a breakdown of some prevalent types:

• Viruses: Self-replicating programs that attach to legitimate files and spread through user interaction.


• Worms: Exploit network vulnerabilities to spread rapidly and consume resources.


• Trojans: Disguised as legitimate software to trick users into installation, often stealing data or disrupting functions.


• Ransomware: Encrypts a victim's files, demanding a ransom for decryption. Targets individuals, businesses, and critical infrastructure.


• Adware: Bombards users with excessive advertisements, pop-ups, and banners.


• Spyware: Steals personal information like login credentials, browsing history, or financial data, often running silently in the background.


• Rootkits: Grant attackers privileged access (root access) to a computer system for complete control, data theft, or tampering.


• Keyloggers: Record every keystroke typed on your keyboard, stealing login credentials, credit card numbers, and other sensitive information.

• Browser Hijackers: Alter web browser settings, often redirecting searches or bombarding you with unwanted ads.


• Malvertising: Legitimate advertising networks unknowingly serve malicious ads that infect devices with malware when clicked.


• Botnets: Networks of compromised devices controlled by a single attacker, used for large scale denial-of-service attacks, spam campaigns, or stealing data en masse.


• Drive-by-Downloads: Malware unknowingly downloaded onto your device simply by visiting a malicious website, without any user interaction.

What is Social Engineering? Part 1

Social engineering is a malicious technique where attackers exploit human psychology to manipulate victims. Unlike hacking computer systems, they target human vulnerabilities like trust, fear, and urgency to trick you into giving up confidential information, performing actions, or transferring money.

1. Phishing




The most prevalent type. Phishing emails or messages (text or social media) appear legitimate, often from banks, credit cards, or trusted websites. They create a sense of urgency, tricking you into clicking malicious links or downloading infected attachments.




Example: You receive an email that appears to be from your bank, warning of suspicious activity on your account. The email urges you to click a link to "verify your identity" and unknowingly enter your login credentials on a fake website.

2. Pretexting




The attacker creates a false scenario (pretext) to gain your trust and extract information. They might impersonate customer service, law enforcement, or tech support, using a convincing story to trick you into revealing sensitive data or granting access to your computer.




Example: You receive a call from someone claiming to be from your internet service provider, stating a service interruption and requesting remote access to "fix" the issue.

3. Baiting




This technique tempts you with something desirable, like a free gift, prize, or exclusive offer. Once interested, the attacker might ask for personal information or require downloading malware disguised as a program to claim the "reward."




Example: You see a social media post advertising a free download of the latest game. Clicking the link takes you to a website that requests your personal information and asks you to download a "game installer" that actually contains malware.

Example: You receive a pop-up message on your computer claiming you have a virus. The message offers a free scan and removal tool, but clicking the "download" button installs malware that steals your information.

5. Tailgating




This physical security breach involves following someone with authorized access into a secure area, like a building or computer system. The attacker might hold the door open or pretend to have forgotten their badge to gain unauthorized entry.




Example: An attacker observes someone tailgating behind an employee entering a restricted area. They take advantage of the opportunity to enter without proper authorization.

6. Piggybacking




Similar to tailgating, piggybacking involves riding someone else's network connection to access a secure network. This might involve using an unsecured Wi-Fi network or exploiting a legitimate user's session to gain unauthorized access.




Example: An attacker connects to a public Wi-Fi network without proper security measures, potentially intercepting data transmitted over the network.

7. Whaling

Example: Attackers might impersonate a CEO or another high-ranking official via email, requesting urgent wire transfers or confidential company data.

8. Scareware

This tactic uses fear to manipulate victims. Scareware messages might warn of critical security vulnerabilities on your device or threaten legal action if you don't take immediate action. They often urge you to download bogus security software or call a fake tech support number, resulting in potential financial loss or malware infection.

Example: You see a pop-up window claiming your computer is infected with hundreds of viruses. The pop-up offers a "system cleanse" tool, but downloading it installs malware that locks your files and demands a ransom payment to unlock them.

Staying Safe from Social Engineering

By understanding the different social engineering tactics and implementing these safeguards, you can significantly reduce your risk of becoming a target.

• Be cautious with unsolicited messages: Don't click on suspicious links or attachments. Verify the sender's identity before responding.


• Don't share personal information readily: Be wary of anyone asking for confidential information via email, phone, or social media. Contact the organization directly using verified phone numbers or websites to confirm requests.


• Be skeptical of urgent requests: Legitimate companies don't pressure immediate action. If suspicious, take your time to verify its authenticity.


• Use strong passwords and enable two-factor authentication: This adds an extra layer of security to your accounts.


• Keep software up-to-date: Updates often include security patches that address vulnerabilities exploited by social engineers.


• Be aware of your surroundings: Don't let anyone tailgate you into secure areas, and avoid using unsecured Wi-Fi networks for sensitive activities.


• Educate yourself and others: The more aware you are of social engineering tactics, the less likely you are to fall victim.
